How does someone go from Drill Sergeant to Youth Minister? Pastor Matt probably doesn't know either, but after 3 years of playing football at West Point and a bad shoulder injury, he found himself back home in Lansing finishing his degree at MSU and directing Holt Campus Life for Lansing Youth For Christ. After 9 months into his ministry career Matt realized that God’s call was to HIS Army and Matt has been in full time ministry ever since. Matt served at Lansing YFC for 10 years, directing Holt Camus Life, developing student leader curriculum, and supervising both paid staff and volunteers. Matt then served as Executive Director for Great Lakes Bay YFC in Saginaw until 2013. The Coppess’ served as Pastor of Family Ministries at Heart ‘O the Lakes United Brethren Church in Brooklyn, MI for 3 years after a brief stint with YFC in Alabama. In 2017, the Coppess Crew returned to the Great Lakes Bay region to Bay City Grace Church and spent the past 4 years as Director of Family Ministries there. Now Matt has followed call once again and is now our Lead Pastor at Calvary. Matt has a passion for reaching families and people of all ages with Christ's love and developing leaders and teams to do the same.
In 1999 Matt and Jodi, (who also served on YFC staff for 10 years, married. The Coppess kids attend Bay City Western. Jake is now 17 and a beast of a football player and wrestler and plans to play college football. Cristin is about to turn 16 and has found her niche in academia and drama.
